Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship for Female Graduates in South Africa

University of KwathZulu-Natal offers Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship for pursuing graduate degree programme. Scholarship is open to female graduates of any South African university. The university is truly South African university that is academically excellent, innovative in research, critically engaged with society and demographically representative, redressing the disadvantages, inequities and imbalances of the past.

The University of KwathZulu-Natal is a multi-campus, residential, teaching and research-led university located in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal. The university has a proud and rich heritage of academic excellence.

Its policy on English language proficiency requires that applicants demonstrate at least one of the following levels of proficiency in English: A pass in an examination equivalent to Level 4 or higher In English as Home or FAL in the South African NSC  examination or English at Higher Grade (First or Second language) at South African Senior Certificate level (Matriculation).

Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing graduate degree programme.

Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded to learn any of the courses offered by the university.

Scholarship Award: The value of the scholarship will be determined from time to time by the university. A scholar shall not hold any other scholarship or bursary or any paid appointment concurrently with the Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship except with the permission of Senate. The holder of the Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship must, during the tenure of the Scholarship, pursue advanced or post graduate studies under such conditions as Senate may approve; and must satisfy Senate from time to time, as required, of her compliance with the said conditions, of her progress in her studies and her good conduct.

Scholarship can be taken at: South Africa

Eligibility: Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this scholarship:-

  • The scholarship is open to female graduates of any South African university who have been resident or who have had a permanent home in Durban (inclusive of metro boundaries) for a period of at least three years immediately preceding the award.
  • The candidates must:
  • be South African citizens
  • have been a registered student at a South African University for at least two years
  • be under the age of 25 years on January 1st of the year of the award, unless the Senate of the university determines otherwise.
  • Have completed at least a four-year curriculum
  • In making the award, preference will normally be given to candidates who, at the date of the award, have completed a five-year curriculum.
  • The scholarship will be tenable for two years.
  • The value of the scholarship will be determined from time to time by the university.
  • A scholar shall not hold any other scholarship or bursary or any paid appointment concurrently with the Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship except with the permission of Senate.
  • The holder of the Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship must, during the tenure of the Scholarship, pursue advanced or post graduate studies under such conditions as Senate may approve; and must satisfy Senate from time to time, as required, of her compliance with the said conditions, of her progress in her studies and her good conduct.
  • Except with the permission of the Senate of the university, a student to whom the Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship is awarded must take up the tenure of the scholarship within a period not exceeding 18 months from the date of the award.

Nationality: South African citizens are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have an appropriate Bachelor’s degree or Admission to the status of that degree in terms of Rule GR7 (a) or Attained a level of competence as defined by rule GR7 (b)
-A School/College may prescribe further criteria for admission to study
-Some Schools/College may accept and Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.

English language/Test Requirements: The University of KwaZulu-Natal is an English-medium university. Its policy on English language proficiency requires that applicants demonstrate at least one of the following levels of proficiency in English:

  • A pass in an examination equivalent to Level 4 or higher In English as Home or FAL in the South African NSC  examination or English at Higher Grade (First or Second language) at South African Senior Certificate level (Matriculation).
  • A pass in English Language at A-level, or O-level (C symbol or higher), or the International Baccalaureate, or equivalent examination.
  • International applicants who do not satisfy the above and for whom English is a  foreign language must attain either
    a) an overall band score of 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for postgraduate studies, and 6.0 for undergraduate studies
  • For information on the IELTS, contact the British Council at the British Embassy or consulate in applicants home country. The system tests the complete range of English language skills required by students studying or training in the medium of English. Modules include listening, speaking, reading, writing, academic and general training.

Supporting Material: In addition to the application for the scholarship, the applicant must submit the following documents:-

  • Full Curriculum Vitae (no copies of certificates)
  • Full Academic Record
  • Two Reference letters
  • Have applicants made contact with any foreign host universities, if so provide details
  • Have applicants attached a letter of motivation as to why they have applied for this scholarship
  • Have applicants attached proof of identity.
